Searching for free music – I’ve done it before, but things change and I get smarter (hopefully). Trying to get a digital copy of a song or album? Look no further. I’ve found the latest and best online tools to get you right to your goal. Instead of previewing 30 second samples or scrounging through the lost and found known as the internet, you can pretty easily obtain or dip your ears in future music purchases. Do you want to discover that band, but your local music store doesn’t have it and you don’t know anyone or any website that offers sampling capabilities? With the right help you can just search for the latest release or the undiscovered gem you’ve been craving or retrieve downloads that you have legal access to. In most cases, downloading albums for permanent archiving is illegal, so be aware of copyright laws. These searches are powerful and can scrape legal and illegal mp3s and archives. Be respectful of songs and albums and know when they are rightfully free and available. Now choose your route depending on whether you want a song or an entire album: SONG-ORIENTED Dilandau Convenient and thorough search with easy listening and [...]

I’ve always been fascinated with mashups. There are some wonderful songs that mix into an equal or better song than the original. There are also mash-ups that mix two already poor songs into a worse song. I attempted to contribute my remixing cents into the pot and I chose “No One” by Alicia Keys to dub (acapella) into a more driving rock song. This just so happened to be the Walkmen. I thought that I might fit in there on a whim and there was little to reverse engineer. I slowed Alicia Key’s tempo, while retaining the pitch which matched Walkmens’ “The Rat” perfectly. The intro singing was a bit off and I had to juggle a few bits of the singing to get them to fit. It caused no headaches and was loads of fun to produce. And the lyrics have a nice pull at each other. “No One” is infatuation and “The Rat” is more annoyance and getting through to her. Take a listen. Alicia Keys vs. The Walkmen – “No One/The Rat” [mp3] Audacity is capable of producing quality mashups. It’s not easy, but if you stumble on the right song combination you can go through a [...]

That’s the only way I can describe the chillingly odd voice of Jerry DeCicca, the singer for The Black Swans. The Black Swans borrow some of the Midwestern folk style with some extraordinary additions that make me say “Interesting.” The voice is like nothing I’ve heard. It’s not that it is so deep, it manages to be a bit nasally at the same time. There is a drawing out of words like Forrest Gump backed by the gritty smoke of Tom Waits. It comes across as a dust-breathing lumberjack who can bellow like Johnny Cash but has an airy flu of Bob Dylan with the vocal range of Louis Armstrong. I can mimic his singing easily enough, but I can’t get enough of the bizarre sound. One of the members who violinned his way through the band is resting in peace. They are playing a show this October in their homestate of Ohio. Their lyrics are amuzingly awkword, yet crudely heartfelt.

Kim Taylor is a better candidate for incessantly repeated airplay than Sara Bareilles. I wrote about this song over a year ago stating that I had heard it a year before that. Unfortunately, the studio mp3s are no longer hosted on her site, but I was lucky enough to catch her demo version when it came out, then her album version, as well as a live version. Her live sets are available with good listening quality at archive.org. Tegan and Sara are another pair of females that I have been flooding into my August ears. Their latest album The Con is probably one of my favorites of the 2000s. Minnesota’s radio station The Current was gracious enough to capture a drum-free version of the title track for us. Tegan & Sara are at it again in the same session with “Back in Your Head.” The simplistic piano reminds me of a criticism against David Albarn’s easy pop-like piano instrumentation. To me, it all sounds good. I would put up half their CD if I wanted to ruin the fact that a mixtape should have a mix of artists. Andrew Bird is brilliance. I can appreciate his style more than Sufjan [...]

Stereo is one of my favorite dual albums, with its counterpart Mono, all of which comes from mastermind Paul Westerberg. I’ve come to realize that I get attached to music that has sentimental appeal, and even more so when it can hit the gut on a personal level as though the lyrics are being drawn straight from your soul. Glenn Case tried to put his skills to the test by playing the entire Stereo record by his lonesome. You have access to the entire digital album (just mp3s) with no nickels or pennies attached. The cover effort is definitely tolerable. A song or two might not have the flare that Paul puts in, but it proves they are well-written songs. Paul pretty much did things on his own with this double-disc and the raw output makes you feel better than anything else that could be raw (I can’t rock too hard with raw vegetables or raw wounds). So take your downloads and run. Or just sit back and soak up the noise. There is much more you can do with it, but you need to start somewhere. That’s what I did; I started to truly listen to music. I found [...]

The yearly festival known as SXSW offers the universe at large the ability to download a slew of free mp3s in the form of a torrent. This year as well as most are full of indie noises and some of the more popular acts like Bloc Party and other recognizables. Some random stranger decided to consolidate a page that had all previous torrents including the most recent one since 2005. The goodness can be enjoyed in this direction. Everybody has their own taste, so get ready to delete a handful of tunes if you have any selective likeness for music. I like weeding through for gems so this is a treasure hunt for me. The torrents should take a while to download, so just let utorrent sit around until you can open your present and unwrap your music in ears.

Some websites die, progress for the worse, or benefit for recreation. Ideas get recycled, reinvented, abused, and improved. So it goes with web-based audio technology. If you need a replacement site or are just looking for new ways to listen to free music without trouble, then read on. Albumbase is Dead There once was a site called albumbase.com that pointed to complete albums uploaded on Rapidshare and other download sites. It has been down for some time, but more and more smaller communities are returning in their place. Album Hunt is a similar service that offers full album archives to registered users. After signing up, searching is as simple as typing the album name or the artist. The only problem is the downloads no longer work after a while or if someone uploads a copyrighted album and it violates the hosting terms of service. Musire is another free album downloads source, but it doesn’t require registration. Places like these thrive on confirming broken links and fresh uploads. The more users, the more chance of a growing selection. Online Media SeeqPod is an interactive search that functions like a web music player.
