I have become a convert of nasal irrigation. Pour isotonic solution into one side of your nose and it flows out of the other nostril. It sounds weird, it looks weird, and it is weird. But it does wonders at clearing out your sinuses and feels more effective than simply blowing your nose. Apparently it’s like brushing your teeth to some people. It’s a regular thing! I started out trying this out at home with a sippy cup and salt water. It didn’t work out so well. The sippy cup was not designed for nasal insertion, unless you have a curvy sippy-cup-shaped nose. I was still interested because my allergies were yelling at my nose (on and off runny and congested). I went to the store and picked up a neti pot that came with some premixed baking soda/salt for use in the water. Don’t worry, doctors approve its practice. Just breathe out of your mouth and not out of your nose or else you may get that awkward sensation like when in a pool and water goes in the wrong places. You will not drown though. I invite you to be part of the schnoz-flushing community. Flood your smeller [...]

Before I get criticized for using the word hallucination, I’d like to point out that illusion and hallucination are different, but they share a bit in common. The first (illusion) meaning you perceive something the wrong way, and the latter meaning you have a vision of something without any sightly cause to promote it (a green ghost from a blank white wall). I’ll also point out that a hallucination will probably have some visual stimulus that may influence what exactly you hallucinate. Even when eyes are closed they still perceive darkness. If outside on a sunny day with your eyes shut, you can still see light reflecting on your eyelids, making a lesser darkness than eyes closed in the dark. It is my opinion that illusions are subtle differences that come from undecipherable stimuli, and more imaginative illusions are deemed hallucinations in the presence of more subtle things or atmosphere. Foreword: None of these require 3D glasses (the Red/Blue shades for Anaglyph images) Begin the Tripping Autostereograms are the common single picture optical illusions where you start close up and cross-eyed and move back and start to see depth. A name often associated with this is “Magic Eye” although they [...]

Can’t go to sleep? Want to be in bed earlier, but it’s impossible? I know what it’s like. I can usually stay asleep, but initiating sleep at the right times is a hassle sometimes. Whether for school or work or peace of mind, we all need rest that is compatible with our schedules. It’s common to break out of a sleep cycle even if it’s not jet lag. We are not equipped with a body that strictly follows the earth’s rotation that makes day and night. We can be in better tune with appropriate sleep habits with a handful of potential aids. Dietary Tips Tryptophan is an amino acid that aids in sleep with increase brain levels of serotonin and/or melatonin. Melatonin is a natural hormone that manages your circadian rhythm. Turkey is the most common suggestion for tryptophan, but other meats contain it as well. Even milk contains small traces of it, as well as calcium, which supposedly helps the brain use the tryptophan to manufacture melatonin. Melatonin also comes in a supplement. If you are to take it for the first time, use a small quantity (Even split the pill if you can). Another thing to think about [...]

I have given a lot of thought lately about antiperspirant. Most people don’t give it any thought and others might have some shifty knowledge about it. I’m the person that enjoys new information and likes to learn. Unfortunately, there are certain things I’d like to know about but lacks no definitive information. What I was able to find is rather interesting though. This is my educational discovery I’d like to share with you… My first stop is at wikipedia where there is no article about antiperspirant (it’s part of the Deodorant entry). Here are the main things I found by doing an ounce of research: All anti-perspirants are considered drugs by the FDA. All antiperspirants are aluminum-based, and work by clogging the duct of the sweat gland. So the opening swells because the aluminum ions interact with the electrolytes/water in the cells. When the quantity of water matches the amount blocking with the aluminum there is equilibrium, and soon the fluid passes back out and unswells and you go back to sweating. Cancer Controversy. The fear came from the idea that toxins would stay in the body instead of being sweat out. There is nothing scientifically to support this, but [...]

Health foods are sometimes more expensive than your basic genetically-modified, science-tampered, chemically treated food. So if you want to consume food that’s good for you, you’ll need to work harder than those eat junk. Small farmers can barely make a living to produce food. Maybe then it’s cheaper to have a garden for yourself, or for a small group like family or neighbors. This is probably the best solution if you have land, but if you need to purchase an area to make your food you might end up paying more for it than just going to the store, considering taxes and fees for owning land, water, and time to care for your crops. If you eat fatty food, you will die. If you eat like a carnivore, you will die. If you eat healthy, you will die. If you don’t eat at all, you will die. This sad fact doesn’t really do anything to this argument (I’m not quite sure if I’m even arguing anything). It seems that eating and cost are closely linked. What is the cheapest thing I can buy while having a well-rounded diet and be filled? It’s not that poor people can’t eat. Going without [...]

Underarm hair is disgusting for females, yet ladies are to tolerate it on men? Don’t get me wrong: I don’t shave my pits, I’m a straight guy, and I’m not really a feminist (in the sense of increasing rights of women only; I’m more of a nongenderist [a made up word] where gender has the least bearing possible on social life so men and women both have rights equally). I’m just curious why men would get grossed out that girls would have hair under their arm. It’s more common in Europe, but I’d like to hear opinions from all around the world. And makeup too- why are women expected to put products on their face? It might imply that they are ugly without it. I’m not trying to argue that it is wrong to do so. Men are using makeup more often than they have in the past. Some women enjoy fancying themselves up. It’s fine if you do, but those who don’t usually get negative comments. The only reason I could come up with is that both makeup and shaving outwardly expresses hygiene and those who don’t do it are perceived as unclean. This doesn’t really hold up though, [...]

Caffeine, the worlds #1 consumed psychoactive drug, can stone your consciousness with irritability, dysphoria, and mania when used improperly; but when in moderation, you can review those TPS reports without falling asleep, jitter and shake to the latest dances, put your brain in the fast lane, and be buzzed without a hangover.* *One may actually alter neural responses (antagonizing adenosine receptors, resulting in increased activity of dopamine; also increasing levels of epinephrine/adrenaline) which builds a tolerance to caffeine which causes withdrawal when intake is decreased. Coffee has been popular around the world for hundreds of years, and espresso, latte, and cappucino is popular today. Espresso is highly concentrated, and depending on the quantity and other factors, a regular shot of espresso can contain approximately twice the caffeine content per volume as a mug of brewed coffee. Some suggest that the psychoactive properties of coffee is more than just caffeine, but not much evidence goes to support whether coffee is generally good or bad for your health overall. Caffeine remains legal as opposed to other drugs, except for limiting or banning sales of caffeinated soda at some public schools. Another interesting, but debatable finding is the relative addictiveness of drugs; caffeine [...]

I would go skateboarding all around the neighborhood, I’ve been snowboarding, and my all-time favorite was riding BMX bikes. I haven’t been as active as when I was younger, but my body still feels remnants of past crashes and major falls. I have yet to break a single bone, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t felt pain before. I can recall many instances of where I got hurt pretty bad: One day I was speeding on my bicycle what felt like 30 mph down a huge hill that declined for about half a mile. I pedaled as fast as I could, but there was a layer of loose dirt that caught my front wheel, and since I only had one hand on the handlebars, I was thrown off my bike tumbling for at least 15 feet. I had road rash and I felt numb. Another time I was riding around and I clumsily landed a trick, then landed flat on my tail bone on rough pavement. I’ve put myself through crashes that seemed like a tiny car accident, except without the [...]

How are you suppose to floss your teeth? There are probably a few tips that can aid you in getting the plaque out of those hard to reach spots of your mouth. First off, brush your teeth first. Chances are that you might put buildup back into the cracks and crevices if you do so after flossing. Make sure you use floss that will fit in between your teeth. Some floss is made for wider spaces and others are stronger so they wont fray or tear in tight spaces. I have a pair of teeth that are up against each other strongly, and it takes practice not to rip the floss. Grab at least a shoulders length worth of floss. Hold the ends with thumb and middle finger and twist it around your middle fingers until it’s short enough for you to hold it snugly against your tooth. Don’t cut off circulation on your fingers. Unfortunately it’s much easier when the floss is stabilized around your finger well, but you should find a balance between control and blue fingertips. Start at one end of the mouth and insert your dental floss between your last molar and its neighbor. Pull it [...]

There aren’t quite 347 exercises listed here yet, but there could be if you considered all the variations to each exercise, and if you added to the list yourself. Plenty of weight lifters try to swoon the ladies with their sexy bod, but in my opinion that is one of the least important benefits of exercise. Exercise is important. It minimizes laziness, helps you feel better, and keeps you healthy. Whether you want to save some money or just stay in shape, follow this guide and adjust it to your liking. I sporadically exercise, so this will help me as much as it will for you. These exercises are beneficial for both men and women. I tried to focus on exercises that will make anyone get stronger and add muscle. Fat loss will definitely occur, but it will not be a localized reduction, which is impossible (e.g. 1000 crunches won’t get rid of belly fat, but will reduce overall body fat). There are also cardiovascular or aerobic exercises which are good for toning, and strengthening the circulatory system, as well as potential weight loss. Do these exercises at your own risk. If you are unsure on how to do things [...]
