There has yet to be a satisfactory system or program that allows tagging multiple custom keywords for a music collection that works on a personal audio library. Besides documenting the available options, this is sort of a request to developers (especially on mac or multi-OS) who use digital music (and possibly iTunes). Let’s get open source with it. Whats Out There If you are up for what i consider cumbersome customization then foobar2000 for windows seems to have plenty of user-made add-ons including tagging capabilities. I no longer have a PC and rarely use Vista on my mac, but I have no ambition to return to the aggravation of tweaking and building it all manually. If you can tackle your collection by hand, then a standard audio playing software like iTunes can plug you in with genres and smart playlists. Genres aren’t always tagged appropriately when imported or bought (especially if downloaded from band websites or record labels). If you want to go in and add keywords in the comment or grouping tag, you can put a classification in a smart playlist to add where COMMENT = [the genre you added] or GROUPING = [electronica]. There are some shareware programs [...]

I’ve always been fascinated with mashups. There are some wonderful songs that mix into an equal or better song than the original. There are also mash-ups that mix two already poor songs into a worse song. I attempted to contribute my remixing cents into the pot and I chose “No One” by Alicia Keys to dub (acapella) into a more driving rock song. This just so happened to be the Walkmen. I thought that I might fit in there on a whim and there was little to reverse engineer. I slowed Alicia Key’s tempo, while retaining the pitch which matched Walkmens’ “The Rat” perfectly. The intro singing was a bit off and I had to juggle a few bits of the singing to get them to fit. It caused no headaches and was loads of fun to produce. And the lyrics have a nice pull at each other. “No One” is infatuation and “The Rat” is more annoyance and getting through to her. Take a listen. Alicia Keys vs. The Walkmen – “No One/The Rat” [mp3] Audacity is capable of producing quality mashups. It’s not easy, but if you stumble on the right song combination you can go through a [...]

Radiohead seems to fit well as a poster child of the current Pop Music. They have taken the sentiments typical of Pop Art and electromagnify it. The attitude of ambivalence and conflicted duality seem to be expressed in the sonic compositions. They blend electronic transformation with traditional instrumentation of rock or alternative music. They utilize unconventional and uglier tones melded together with pretty pitches. The realistic but slightly morphed singing creates a strong contrast with how the tracks are laid down that continues a saga of music. They might not be creating a new genre or anything, but I can see today’s culture being reflected in a good light by this band. They are popular because of balance of tastes. I can’t say I like a fifth of what plays on pop radio, let alone all radio, but some artists are capable of a wide fan reach. I think Radiohead’s In Rainbows is one of 2007′s best albums, but that is irrelevant to the rest of the monologue. Indie is Post-Pop I can guarantee this term (indie) is the delimiter within the continuum just like Postmodern was/is to modernism. You don’t hear terms like Pop Film or Pop Books much [...]

I know this is petty, but I find it humorously bothersome (not really though) when someone says “You can preorder Aqualung’s new album Words & Music offline.” So I can order by phone or reserve one through the postal service because it is offered OFFline? Disconnect your modem! The internet is not required. There is a trick going around the not on but off of the internet showing a hack to access google.com offline (no cache required). ISPs have been a scam all these years. We don’t need to suffer speeds of dial-up or even cable internet services. And forget local disk space; everything can be stored remotely offline. Maybe I’m wrong though. It’s possible the use of “offline” is meant to remove items from the internet. You can get firefox offline. In this example, the user is trying to say you can delete firefox from the internet so nobody can download and install it from the Mozilla website. This strategy is like a takedown of a website that will give you a 404 Error when visiting reliable sites such as youtube.com.

It’s that time to not really have a specific time to roll out with this monthly playlist. The downside of user videos is the sound isn’t so crisp. This My Morning Jacket song tingles down to the center of my body. So much energy. This song echoes my recent blog post about language: all that I wanted to say / words only got in the way Pure sonic quality for a daydream. This is the Walkmen beautifying a song written by Mazarin. “And another one goes by…” My Morning Jacket returns with a slow touching ballad. There’s Just One Thing about his voice that I don’t think I possess quite yet. The Cure smoothly enters the scene after the somber MMJ song. “Pictures of You” is one of my favorites from the Cure. The lyrics are a bit dark, but the melodic compatibility is phenomenal. It’s very easy to sense the feeling in what the imagery reveals. It may appear I am sinking into sorrow by now, but bear with me. It’s not what it seems at all. In fact I see glee in these songs. And to hear the downtrodden somehow made me feel more comfortable. My playlist has [...]

This song is about as gritty as it gets this month. Here’s a live version. I have SXSW to thank for this song being available for free download. Nothing quite life-changing, but pleasantly atmospheric. “What’s the World Got in Store” by Wilco – music clip Surprisingly no media to go with this one. Working hard? Feeling tired? Regardless, you gotta wonder. My Morning Jacket has masterpiece material. This-geetah doesn’t have any official videos, but this seems to be the only fan recording you can actually make out the audio of. Poor quality; tremendous sound though. Wish I could have seen them live. Coming off the Bootleg Series is “If You See Her, Say Hello.” This is the, the, the defining recording of this song. Stripped, but more complete. Powerful lyrics. This version would qualify as my favorite song if it were pressed onto Blood on the Tracks. It puts me in silence.
It’s about time I made and shared a monthly mix of songs that call out to me in some way. Instead of going the illegal route and handing out a downloadable mp3 playlist, I figured I’d capture the collection on video where possible. I know… I’m 2 months behind. But this is truly my April playlist sitting in iTunes, with May and June trailing right after it. Most of the songs here reflect my personal composure for the month. Sometimes the lyrics just hit the focal point, other times it’s the nostalgia of the track, and still other times when a segment of words sets a spark on my mind. Instead of going through the intimate details of my personal life, maybe you can interpret why these songs qualify as my monthly life soundtrack (though sometimes there may be no reason). And maybe you’ll find these fitting for a chapter in your music diary. Named “Predicting April” because it definitely set the tone for things to come. I do not claim to be a psychic or a prophet though. I could not get this out of my head. Only snippets though. I’m a big fan of the album this comes [...]

Personal finance is important, especially in economic slumps. Whether you are an in-debt college student considering student loans or a successful business owner with a sum of unspent funds, you need to keep watch over your money. Making money is something altogether a different subject, but once you have it you should let it work for you. Having it sit in the bank without earning interest over time does you little good. Inevitable inflation makes your cash lass valuable than if you were to spend it as soon as you got it. Instead of wasting more hours of your life at work, employ your money to earn on its own. A safe and easy solution that does the job for you is to take advantage of compounding interest through an insured high-yield online savings account. This is a small step that could give you results while keeping your money liquid without any risk or fees. Initially EmigrantDirect was a leader in offering the greatest yield with the least hassles. They have since dropped their rates below the other online competitors, making them not as appealing. E*trade has stuck in the top percent of better rates, but their service hasn’t rated [...]

Stereo is one of my favorite dual albums, with its counterpart Mono, all of which comes from mastermind Paul Westerberg. I’ve come to realize that I get attached to music that has sentimental appeal, and even more so when it can hit the gut on a personal level as though the lyrics are being drawn straight from your soul. Glenn Case tried to put his skills to the test by playing the entire Stereo record by his lonesome. You have access to the entire digital album (just mp3s) with no nickels or pennies attached. The cover effort is definitely tolerable. A song or two might not have the flare that Paul puts in, but it proves they are well-written songs. Paul pretty much did things on his own with this double-disc and the raw output makes you feel better than anything else that could be raw (I can’t rock too hard with raw vegetables or raw wounds). So take your downloads and run. Or just sit back and soak up the noise. There is much more you can do with it, but you need to start somewhere.
