09/2011 Update: Craigslist seems to change their booleans every now and then. Parenthesis and apostrophes at one point were for phrases and OR operators. Just like the renowned Google search engine, Craigslist.org has their own technical search term operators that will alter the parameters of your search. If you are looking to add special conditions such as customizing your neighborhoods when looking for an apartment near downtown Tucson and historic districts, you could easily enter in the following into the native search bar on craigslist: "iron horse"|"armory park"|"el encanto"|"feldmans"|"feldman's"|"Rincon Heights"|"Arizona Inn"|"Colonia Solana"|"Fourth Avenue"|"Sixth Avenue"|"6th Ave"|"4th Ave"|"west University" If the above code doesn’t make too much sense, so I can break it down for you. The search looks at 15 distinct searches with single words, or multiple words in consecutive order. You can make your own custom searches in Craigslist by following their rules for Boolean keys: "entire phrase" Anything in parentheses is treated as an exact phrase. grey|gray Vertical pipes act as an “OR” as shown in spelling the ambiguous color. This comes in handy if you want to search for multiple items at once. It can save you plenty of time. "new york|jersey" This one uses both previous search [...]

Before you get the idea that this will be fanboy activism, realize that I could care less about the Microsoft/Apple debates, politics, and the social innuendos and biases surrounding the computer world. This is just my experience and in no way will it reflect that better alternative exist. Since my purchase of a used MacBook Pro and formerly having a previous history of Windows PCs, I’ve gladly formed some new habits and learned a few things to reacquaint myself to multi-OS literacy. Although the used product was expensive compared to new hardware, I also paid for the the operating system and Apple-only hardware and design. My review of significant findings are as follows: What I dig on the Mac: -Expose. It’s customizable, simple, and practical. It lets you view all windows (like thumbnails) in your workspace so you can locate the right window scaled down to fit your display. You can assign a keyboard shortcut (hotkey) or lead your mouse to any of the corners of your screen. -Trackpad two-finger scroll. I can scroll anywhere on the pad by having 2 fingers dragging in any direction. -Garageband is nice for looping and more electronic based audio development. It’s a nice [...]

There has yet to be a satisfactory system or program that allows tagging multiple custom keywords for a music collection that works on a personal audio library. Besides documenting the available options, this is sort of a request to developers (especially on mac or multi-OS) who use digital music (and possibly iTunes). Let’s get open source with it. Whats Out There If you are up for what i consider cumbersome customization then foobar2000 for windows seems to have plenty of user-made add-ons including tagging capabilities. I no longer have a PC and rarely use Vista on my mac, but I have no ambition to return to the aggravation of tweaking and building it all manually. If you can tackle your collection by hand, then a standard audio playing software like iTunes can plug you in with genres and smart playlists. Genres aren’t always tagged appropriately when imported or bought (especially if downloaded from band websites or record labels). If you want to go in and add keywords in the comment or grouping tag, you can put a classification in a smart playlist to add where COMMENT = [the genre you added] or GROUPING = [electronica]. There are some shareware programs [...]

Just when you thought Google was satisfied with search simplicity, it now has another way of mining data on a massive scale, hopefully to improve the results of their searches. I just stumbled across this in the morning, and I’m not sure if this is a permanent public module or not. There are two new buttons next to each search entry, Promote and Remove. There’s even a new commenting bit for every single result. I’m a little weary to jump in on all of this though. Do I really need to manually weed through results to get what I want in the future? If you choose to participate by clicking those links (must have a Google account), they offer this warning: Customize your search results with your rankings, deletions, and notes — plus, see how other people using Google have tailored their searches. Please remember that your SearchWiki notes will be visible to other users, identified with your Google Account nickname. I know this is petty, but I find it humorously bothersome (not really though) when someone says “You can preorder Aqualung’s new album Words & Music offline.” So I can order by phone or reserve one through the postal service because it is offered OFFline? Disconnect your modem! The internet is not required. There is a trick going around the not on but off of the internet showing a hack to access google.com offline (no cache required). ISPs have been a scam all these years. We don’t need to suffer speeds of dial-up or even cable internet services. And forget local disk space; everything can be stored remotely offline. Maybe I’m wrong though. It’s possible the use of “offline” is meant to remove items from the internet. You can get firefox offline. In this example, the user is trying to say you can delete firefox from the internet so nobody can download and install it from the Mozilla website. This strategy is like a takedown of a website that will give you a 404 Error when visiting reliable sites such as youtube.com.

WordPress updates are often needed for security fixes and the most recent additions (v2.5) to usability are pretty nice. The negative end of things is correcting plugin bugs, confirming database integrity, and revising my custom-developed theme. Luckily I don’t have a heavy load of intricate sites that all need updating, but even the few that I oversee need to be tweaked for a smooth ride across the interverse. I’m still looking around for plugin alternatives, minor error corrections, and an eased mind. I’ve already put a few enhancing tools in their place. I even got over the terrible native tagging system and managed to ditch UltimateTagWarrior without losing my favorite goodies.
Some websites die, progress for the worse, or benefit for recreation. Ideas get recycled, reinvented, abused, and improved. So it goes with web-based audio technology. If you need a replacement site or are just looking for new ways to listen to free music without trouble, then read on. Albumbase is Dead There once was a site called albumbase.com that pointed to complete albums uploaded on Rapidshare and other download sites. It has been down for some time, but more and more smaller communities are returning in their place. Album Hunt is a similar service that offers full album archives to registered users. After signing up, searching is as simple as typing the album name or the artist. The only problem is the downloads no longer work after a while or if someone uploads a copyrighted album and it violates the hosting terms of service. Musire is another free album downloads source, but it doesn’t require registration. Places like these thrive on confirming broken links and fresh uploads. The more users, the more chance of a growing selection. Online Media SeeqPod is an interactive search that functions like a web music player.
Since the beginning of January, Alexa Redirect links have been deprecated and no longer function. They work as a prevention to get to your site. It used to be possible to inject your link with a forced redirect from alexa: http://redirect.alexa.com/redirect?http://liquidparallax.com would tell Alexa someone is going to my homepage. It was debated whether this would send info to your rank. In any case it could harm your Google Page Rank and make links inaccessible when the redirect is down or is broken, which has happened. There is plenty of talk on how to increase your score. And along with it all is bad advice or misinformed instruction. Another myth: installing the website widget has no standing on your numbers unless one of your site visitors decides to use the toolbar as a result of being curios about your widget. There is no way to increase your Alexa Rank beyond what your site is capable of performing. You can boost your site’s traffic rank for Alexa if you actually have traffic. A rank of 1 means you have the most traffic that has been monitored by Alexa (right now it’s Yahoo.com). Each number is a position, and you can’t get [...]

I’m usually the person who scolds other site for doing “This Month’s Best Posts Roundup,” but this is slightly different. In over a year of doing this blog, I’ve never put myself in an egocentric position and said “Internet users can’t get enough of me. Instead of being more useful I’ll just repeat myself.” Au contraire my friends. It is my hope that you do not have to suffer through recycled material. Nobody cares for used underwear, and that’s where I don’t come in… There does come a time, though, when things get overlooked especially when I first started this site and nobody really saw it. I’m not a fan of number crunching accounting type stuff, so I like to keep non-fun math out of things. That’s why I’ll skim through some of the pages that get a lot of traffic without getting statistical, and I’ll jump into some pages that haven’t received any recognition and give some background to my madness.
