Plus, its got a mashup vibe with all the sampling of vocals and whatnot. I am pretty picky with my electronic-inspired selections, so this one doesn’t disappoint. Check out the goofy dance moves from a tall and balding move-buster who is probably in his thirties, then joined by an ultra-blonde lady in this bizarre stopmotion/choreography video.

December was busy. Plenty going on, plenty to listen to, plenty of plenty. I didn’t capture much to mixtape this month, and it didn’t help that a good portion of the stuff I collected have no documentation other than rarer recordings or the are just too unestablished to have a music video or performance. I didn’t include any standard Christmas songs, but I’ll consider it next year. Things were just so crazy that it didn’t feel like Christmas until it was over. And I run out of time. But I gave some to you: “The Wrath of Marcie” by The Go! Team I’m amazed by the different elements that make this song what it is. The urban youth chant mixed with the samples of catchy horns from what sounds like the 70s topped off with a hint of Asian girl pop background vocals with a healthy dose of indie rock to slap it all together. Certainly danceable and full of goodness. “Under Control” by The Strokes Sets the perfect mood. Cool. Not arrogant. Got some crooning action going on. Move over Sinatra, smooth garage rockers have come in town. They have been out of the pop media for a spell, [...]

“Feel the Pain” by Dinosaur Jr. This live version has a painful introduction- It’s a bit scratchier than the studio version. The instrumental arrangements are so complimentary. The bass and guitar were born to play like this together. This song comes off of their lesser-known gem of an album Without a Sound. “Give Me Strength” by Neil Young Straight from the scenes of an unreleased 1997 album Chrome Dreams, this is the acetate that is a bootleg that is a recording with the “Rust Edition” tacked on the Chrome Dreams title. A soft delivery of a powerful tune. “Powderfinger” by Neil Young This comes from the same series. Here he is no longer 22, but he manages to not blow his career being old; and he still has guitar playing skills; and he didn’t need to bring up politics to yield a response from anybody. My favorite line is the reference to the title “Shelter me from the powder and the finger // Cover me with the thought that pulled trigger.” The background echoes during that part detract from how it sounds compared to the bootleg, but it is still intensely stirring. “Shadowland” by Youth Group I didn’t realize they [...]

Broken Social Scene – “Superconnected” A band I will have to put on my unwritten “bands I want to see live” list. I had the unfortune (very different from misfortune) of being too busy to see My Morning Jacket and Vampire Weekend perform in my town in the month of September. My Morning Jacket’s new album is much weaker than their others. The funk and falsetto (which I am a big fan of normally) seems a bit forced and over the top. But I would have seen them if I could have. I ended up saving a hefty wad of cash by missing the show. Instead I repeatedly listened to songs that would make me feel superconnected. I might sound pretentiously hip by by mentioning this song has a theme of postmodern distaste with hyperinvolvement, the information technology that consolidates individuality. Lewis & Clarke – “Before It Breaks You” This song drew me in instantly. It’s softness reflects Iron and Wine, but without the cold harshness of the iron and the luxury of the wine. A guitar somehow speak like a harp. The words might get judged as being overly poetic, but there is never a shallow boy-girl moment (like [...]

I admire the ideas of George Berkeley. He’s probably misunderstood. He probably didn’t think what he was saying was the absolute nature of reality in it’s precise form. He merely brought to the surface that you can be completely sane and logical and believe that the physical doesn’t exist (or more accurately, that the material world is created in the immaterial mind foremost thus being a byproduct of immaterial and its existence being a collective perception). He isn’t a contemporary man with knowledge of today’s technology or advancements, but I think his ideas (whether true or not) still hold up fairly well. I don’t hold onto his philosophy as the elite definition of metaphysics, but I have certainly incorporated a similar mindset into my not-so-concrete conception of reality that is compatible with my outlook on life. My Morning Jacket tapped on Berkeley’s shoulder by bringing up some of his ideas into song, this one being called “Steam Engine.” So I do believe, none of this is physical At least not to me So, I do believe That anywhere it goes It’s always with me It’s not the dream That makes you weak It’s not the night that makes you sleep [...]

I’m still behind and that is alright because I am spreading these out. “Break My Body/Hold My Bones.” Those few words get trapped into my earbanks. This song is about as gritty as it gets this month. Here’s a live version. I have SXSW to thank for this song being available for free download. Nothing quite life-changing, but pleasantly atmospheric. “What’s the World Got in Store” by Wilco – music clip Surprisingly no media to go with this one. Working hard? Feeling tired? Regardless, you gotta wonder. My Morning Jacket has masterpiece material. This-geetah doesn’t have any official videos, but this seems to be the only fan recording you can actually make out the audio of. Poor quality; tremendous sound though. Wish I could have seen them live. Coming off the Bootleg Series is “If You See Her, Say Hello.” This is the, the, the defining recording of this song. Stripped, but more complete. Powerful lyrics. This version would qualify as my favorite song if it were pressed onto Blood on the Tracks. It puts me in silence. Beck. “Guess I’m Doing Fine.” A crisp live performance. Speechless. Press My Face Up to the [...]

Yes, I just invented a word, unawarer: n. a person who is unaware or not familiar. And this here is a guide, not a tour guide, but a textual guide to spread the thought-provoking butter that is Paul Westerberg and the musical bread that was The Replacements. If you have glanced over my site you’d find I’ve got Westerburgundy sprinkled across random posts. And this guy is worth your time. He one of those that deserves more attention… Well he might be better off being the “Best thing that never happened.” And that is what he’s. He possesses the talents of genius wordplay, tonal breath control, messy performances, off key brilliance, and the power to make you feel nostalgia for the future/present. There is something special that is hard to pinpoint. Paul takes an A.D.D. approach to music. Capture the concept of a song in the first few takes because he’ll forget it in its precise birth. That is why some of his solo work sounds like demos, ridden with insignificant errors, abrupt transitions, and mumbly segments in lyrics. But he is just as capable of making a gorgeous polyphony with an array of angelic intricacies. The Music He has [...]

Time is hard to find. Worthwhile knowledge is tangled in time. So what are my plans for you loyal readers? I’m working on the most valuable list that will end all lists. It will be ready in a while. I want to make sure it’s easy and accurate. The topic: music. And don’t worry– it will be worth the wait. Yesterday I watched a documentary: Salivador Dali – Genius Or Madman Below is just a 5-minute sample. I’m not about to download another video player by Veoh just to watch this in its entirity, so I went over to a video downloader site for youtube, myspace, dailymotion, etc. If you follow my lead and grab this video, be sure to save the file with a .flv extension or it won’t play. The .FLV file is playable in VLC media player. For some odd reason, scrolling through the video didn’t work, but you can rewind and fast forward with the buttons. (Whew! This is my first time embeding video from veoh and it barely fits the width of my layout.) So is he a genius or a madman? I’d say a bit of both.
