Owen and Carl Broemel. These guys go well together, and they are both haven’t seen much fame compared to other things they’ve been involved in. I don’t think there is any known relationship between the two, but they would make a great split album together. And they’d do a fine job of making a smooth back-to-back playlist session. Owen is a solo project of one of the members of Cap’n Jazz and American Football. I admit that I haven’t heard enough of these bands, but I’ve heard the album At Home With Owen for free through the broke-but-music-loving-slut’s-dream known as Ruckus Network. Too bad there aren’t albums of the other bands on there though. Anyway, Owen has a sound that is easy on the ears. His discography is pleasurable all around and sultry for the plaintive down-and-outers and the jolly giants. And then there is My Morning Jacket’s Carl Broemel soft acoustic jams. Musical Family Tree out of Indiana hosts the solo album of Carl Broemel who calls Indiana his home state. This blog made it easy to download it all at once if you don’t want to click each track to save it.

November was a jam-packed month. And December is surpassing the busyness. Well all is good here. This month by chance got invaded by upbeat songs from more recent times. Not much early blues and older-than-oldies that I sometimes get hung up on. Versus – “Eskimo” Think of the coolest musical catches and a spurt of 90s noise rock. This has some great backbone to it too with the on-the-verge electro drums. They are not popular enough to have a music video, so enjoy the free download. Pras Michel feat. ODB & Mya – “Ghetto Supastar” Mya has such a captivating melody and her delivery is exceptional. Sometimes the rap interjections are distracting other than main verses, but this song managed to get stuck in my head without complaints. No reason why Mya’s vox get plugged into remixes and mashups. Alicia Keys – “No One” She can sing this well live and I am impressed. If you are a radio junkie or just have some passing knowledge of pop music, you’ve been bombarded with this song. I love it despite my usually negative encounter to mainstream radio (I thought this song was mistakenly put on hip-hop radio after they surprisingly played [...]

I’m a sucker for old music. It can be folk. It can be blues. It can be gospel. I’m not too picky, although I can get tired of Billy Murry, acoustic era skits, and unoriginal popular oldies. WFMU is a diverse radio station that also delivers free podcasts through the internet. Mp3s are available for I think two weeks (it’ll automatically download if set in iTunes [Insert into iTunes from menu: Advanced>Subscribe to Podcast]) Most shows are streamable with Real after two weeks. Here’s a list of some of the programs that offer some older variety of music (some include a mix of new music as well). Sinner’s Crossroads with Kevin Nutt Page + Podcast “Scratchy vanity 45s, pilfered field recordings, muddy off-the-radio sounds, homemade congregational tapes and vintage commercial gospel throw-downs.” Get your gospel fix here from all sides of America. The Christian infomercials are just hilarious. Antique Phonograph Music Program Page + Podcast “Pop, standard, and ethnic music acoustically recorded on discs and cylinders and played on period machines circa 1895-1925.” Hear just about every accent and plenty of ancient sounding audio from sketches to acoustic era music. Thomas Edison’s Attic Page + Podcast “The audio curator at [...]

The following is a review by the author of the album- Mistakes Make Music. Bolie Folke (his real name is undisclosed) was kind enough to let me post his biographical account of the recording below: Today I made an album ready for the public to download using the one-man-band name of Bolie Folke. It’s a quick and dirty album birthed by pressure-induced creativity. It began with my rendition of “Jesus is a Mighty Good Leader,” a pre-war blues song by Skip James in the public domain. It was also covered by Beck Hansen. I took the song and played only one root chord over it with a bit of fingerpicking embellishments and seasonings to add some color. The harmonica was improvisation (you might be able to tell that I haven’t practiced in a while). As I pondered my spontaneous version of the song, I was reminded of a cool project that I found a long while ago called Album-A-Day from Crap Art (aptly titled). I went to the site and found out if I participated, then I’d be breaking one of the rules: No ideas from before the chosen day! This means covers or reinterpretations are not allowed. I decided [...]
