Beach House’s new release is a month away from being released, but I caught this track available in the German version of Amazon. It’s more layered and polished than earlier songs they’ve done in that it’s less of the lo-fi and more atmospheric studio sound with added production. It’s still dreamy, bright, and contemplative- staying true to their style without being stale either. Check the video or link below for a glimpse of what the new album will sound like. I’m looking forward to this one. Happy Easter! Stream the mp3 Beach House – Lazuli from alejandro puch on Vimeo.

Amazon.com has had free mp3s for a least a few years. I remember discovering they had a “free downloads” section and I was able to find some stuff that interested me. There was even recognizable stuff (I can’t remember all of them, but I do recall seeing Yo La Tengo, popular Christmas tunes, and some exciting indie). As you can still see, Amazon still has a Free Music Download section, with a search box for it and a link to the same page on the upper right. That’s as far as it goes though. The search function doesn’t yield any results and the page has no content (It used to have featured digital downloads and short write-ups and maybe reviews). What I did find was that at least some of the free mp3s are still hosted and the referring download links still function. The problem is accessing the URLs that can no longer be found because of Amazon’s lack of a working search engine and the empty page content. Using the wayback machine to get an archived version does nothing but redirect to a newer page. With some crafty search skills I found a few pages that mention these old [...]

Remember the Music From the Adventures of Pete & Pete? I sure do. While I like the Nickelodeon show, the music stands on its own. The mastermind behind the theme song is Mark Mulcahy. I’m sure you never heard of him (unless you searched for him specifically). Due to a missing member, they renamed Miracle Legion to Polaris for the Nick project. They can be seen playing during the opening scene of the show and they make a episode appearance with their music being an integral part of the episode. Although Miracle Legion, Polaris, and Mark Mulcahy never had a huge following, he has his share of admirers. Thom Yorke [Radiohead] dedicated a song to him during a show. R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe asked him to play with him after he had written a song for Stipe. Miracle Legion began in the ’80s, Polaris in the 90′s, and Mark continues today. While I haven’t seen as much brilliance in his more recent material, I haven’t invested in his solo albums. All I’ve heard are 30 second clips and a few mp3s from his very own record label, Mezzotint. Rhythm section Scott Boutier and Dave McCaffrey who can be heard on Drenched [...]

I have been using Amazon heavily lately to expand my music collection, catch up on my reading, get textbooks, and getting a DVD [Come Feel Me Tremble] that I’ve been wanting for a while. If you look under the grill of Amazon.com, you can hack your spending techniques and get the best value. Buy used or new (through sellers’ listings) The first step is to be willing to buy a product that has been handled by someone else. Every now and then a deal will come your way on sealed items that are offered by Amazon sellers. The majority of items on Amazon are cost effective when buying used rather than new, even when tacking on shipping charges. Direct Amazon purchases (New items) usually offer free shipping on $25+ orders, but used sellers always have a set shipping rate. The exception are high-demand items and recent releases. Lucinda Williams’ West, which came out February of this year goes for the regular price of $9.99 from the Amazon.com factory and $7.99 in the marketplace. Also, pay attention to the seller’s descriptions and decipher what conditions suit your needs. For instance, there might be a $1.00 CD but it doesn’t include the [...]

Every now and then I am going to review an obscure, rare, or under appreciated piece of music that can be found in discount racks or elsewhere for dirt cheap. Think of these as Amazon steals (but nothing illegal), complete with personal notes or cool background info. This first one I’d like to share is Heartbreak Town by the band, The Stand. Right now it’s going for $0.46. You can tell how unknown this is because Amazon didn’t even give it an artist. The picture and everything is correct though. This is the second release they put out. Three were released on the Wonderland label: 1989 – The Stand 1990 – Heartbreak Town 1992 – In Three Days The only other album for sale online is In Three Days. I did a search to see if they made anything afterwards because Amazon lists other Audio CDs under the name Stand. There is another band called STAND that started around in the 2000s, but they are unrelated. The Stand that I’m talking about came out of Canada and the lead singer was Tony Valenziano. The funny thing was I purchased this thinking it was somehow related to Altar Boys. I was [...]

(If you have a short attention span and don’t care much for commentary, skip this paragraph and go straight to the five steps for the online music lover) Years ago, it was harder to find out more detailed information about songs and their writers without searching catalogs, or finding related articles or interviews, or talking with a musicologist. Modern times have expanded the capabilities of learning, sorting, and refining what interests us all on a personal basis. On the other hand, digital music and digital management lacks the secondary qualities of a physical library. You have nothing to “hold” …and your mouse doesn’t count. Music loses the entity it had 50 years ago when you had something to look at and call your own. Now everyone basically has their own radio station right at their fingertips. Today, radio no longer has the powerful position as it did long ago because it has been transferred directly to the person. Just like listening radio, you never worry about rewinding a tape or scrambling through a basement of records to hear the next song. It just plays (until you say otherwise). You are the DJ. And here is how to use your tools [...]
