The fellow who arose into the music world in the 1960s and is still kicking cannot be duplicated, cloned, or replaced. There can be no replacements, but there can be The Replacements. The ‘Mats (as the band is nicknamed) have little in common with Dylan, but there are some resembling characteristics of its lead singer in a broad sense. Ever since I heard Paul Westerberg, I could tell he was holding the gift of songwriting that Dylan had. Like Robert Zimmerman, he has explored and avoided the polytomy of genres. Without being a Bob soundalike, Paul has paved his own musical path with Dylan as one of many references. There is a twenty year gap between when these artists first faced the world with their guitars. With these thoughts in mind, I was surprised (or at least interested) in reading an article I stumbled on after developing my own personal connections. For the most part, the author of the article (Bob Mehr of The Chicago Tribune) gets the facts pretty straight. Although I do question that Bob Dylan told a shocked Joan Baez that he wrote “Masters of War” to cash in. I have followed both Paul Westerberg and Bob [...]

Even after appearing on The OC TV program in 2004, The Walkmen are a band that that have succeeded in not receiving much popularity. They play a “new” old sound almost like the Strokes, but they incorporate some of the great sound of Bob Dylan and the Velvet Underground. They borrow the Dylanized mannerisms and have that droning noisy pop sound typical of V.U. Before the Walkmen, there existed Jonathon Fire*Eater. Three Walkmen members played in this band. They had a different singer, but the same garage rock. They originated from DC, but went to college in New York. JFE’s first album was released by a defunct label in Tucson, Arizona, called Third World Underground Records. They put out 4 more releases, all which are pretty hard to get a hold of at a decent price. Things happened and the lead singer left to form the Ignobles and others in the band sculpted the Walkmen. There is free downloads to be had over at FreeIndie of what they sound like. NPR also has a concert that you can download. Besides covering Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues” on the cover album of John Lennon/Harry Nilsson’s Pussycats, and the other Pussycat covers, there [...]

Politics in music can be: a political front, where political ideology writes the music before artistic expression is considered. An example would be a singer who writes songs specifically for a party (to gain acceptance by a political party or to affect swing states or something stupid). A sub-category might be songwriters writing Christian songs to cater to a certain audience regardless of their own beliefs. In both cases, people are cashing in on particular niches. real feelings that are used by a political group, so that the musician becomes a puppet for a campaign. I think Bob Dylan might fall under this (but I think he was able to avoid being cornered, he might be explaining this on his album, “Another Side”). Dylan clearly has opinions and has spoken clearly about social injustice. He has not, however, segregated himself from the public to hear what he has to say. He never said “Hey, I’m a Democrat. Because of this I am telling you to change.” Instead he speaks from the heart and lets his words stand for what they are. Also, he never attacks people personally based on politics. This would be a logical fallacy against the man. Opinions [...]

In no particular order, some of the best voices I’ve heard are… Tony Clifton The amazing character devised by the genius Andy Kaufman. He’s a Las Vegas lounge singer whose hobby is being a rude and arrogant bad guy. If you’ve never heard what he sounds like, take an ear to him singing the Star-Spangled Banner. Bill Cosby Who can forget the goofy antics and accentuated style of the man who had too many shows with the name Cosby in it and too many people trying to imitate him? He is a comedian who manages to make me laugh while not using foul language. So grab some jello and hear a clip of him talking about Superman. The Simpsons Cast The entire show of the Simpsons is full of various strange voices, from an accent from India to Homer to Mr. Burns. Youtube has a hilarious video of some of the voice overs. Nancy Cartwright is the voice actor of Bart. This interview shows how similar she really speaks compared to Bart. I love her laugh which you’ll hear in the interview many times- it’s totally Bart-esque. Doh! Bob Dylan Whether you like him or not, this significant figure has [...]
