I have found so much music for free that I can’t fit it all on my iPod. There is just too much out there. And the best thing about it is nobody gets in trouble for breaking the law if you have permission, although there are some organizations that want to restrict your musical freedom altogether (like making it illegal to even transfer CDs to your iPod). Although stealing music is fairly easy, it’s not as fun and fulfilling as having a legitimate library of tunes. By compiling an exhaustive list of legal alternatives, I hope it will suppress your desire to pirate music and be caught with the penalties. I personally think digital and music law needs reform, but we should be cautious of some of the illogical interpretations of the law so we don’t get into trouble. There are trillions of audio files roaming around the internet in a legal haze of lawsuits, and whether on purpose or not, I’m sure you’ve stumbled across them. I should note that doing things the legal way can be difficult or just a plain old hassle, but I have taken countless hours finding the top sources and also revealing the most [...]

ROCKbox is open source firmware that can be dual-booted (at least with my 5th generation iPod) with the original iPod system so you don’t have to erase all your music by overwriting and re-transferring all your things. And it works on many mp3 players, not just Apple. Rockbox for the 5G iPod does not manage videos, podcasts, and lacks a few minor things that Apple firmware has. However, there is much to get excited about with Rockbox: it comes with plenty of games, themes, even a gameboy emulator if you have roms. It supports ogg vorbis, flac, and other uncommon codecs in addition to the usual mp3, m4a, etc. There are extra themes and much to explore. It took a little while to get familiar with the controls and to understand how things worked. Unlike linux, it was very easy to get things installed. I didn’t have to use any command line or input advanced parameters to get anything to work right away. Installation is the easy part. If you learn quick, you may not need any help afterwards. I’d suggest that everyone else look at the manual. The buttons and menu structures are handled differently than the default iPod [...]

I’ve got an iPod that can’t store all my music, but I still automatically update checked items in my iTunes library (it’s a syncing option). I’ve found a workaround for one of my wishes that Apple probably won’t be adding any time soon. My desire is to sort tracks by check mark box (whether selected or unselected). There is no way to do this natively, but we can configure a smart playlist. Make a smart playlist by holding SHIFT, and clicking on the button on the bottom left. It looks like a gear or cog when SHIFT is held down, and it’s a plus sign (+) otherwise. You should see a popup to set rules and options for the play list. Edit the settings to match the picture shown. Uncheck “Match following rule.” Check the following three check-boxes, and edit the second check box so your entire library is considered. There are several ways to catch all of your items, but this works if your library is less than 900GB. Now you’ve got a playlist of all of your checked items only (I called it “Checked on iPod”). Anytime you uncheck an item, it will instantly leave that playlist; and [...]

The iPod is considered a great invention or at least an advanced improvement of portable music using the latest technologies. There are also others who criticize it, who realize it isn’t perfect, and who know how cheap it isn’t. I’ve got one and I see the good and bad of it. But some creative individual has put it in a battle against the old cassette tape and it’s up to you decide on a winner. Go see the matchup with pictures and commentary; it’s the iPod vs. the Cassette
