This might seem like a no-brainer, but Apple allows 5 computers to have access to your paid-for library. So this can apply to your home desktop, laptop, your old clunker you left at your parents, office PC, and maybe a computer or 2 you use when you are at a friend’s house. That last bit is where iTunes grants some flexibility. It doesn’t know who your friends are. You might have some legal ownership to the computer, and even if you don’t- you still use it and have a right to listen to your library locally when using somebody else’s computer. It’s similar to the circle of friends features (My 5) that cell-phone services offer. Being able to pool music from your friends and have your friends pool your iTunes purchases is a nice way to stay within the bounds of iTunes DRM.

Searching for free music – I’ve done it before, but things change and I get smarter (hopefully). Trying to get a digital copy of a song or album? Look no further. I’ve found the latest and best online tools to get you right to your goal. Instead of previewing 30 second samples or scrounging through the lost and found known as the internet, you can pretty easily obtain or dip your ears in future music purchases. Do you want to discover that band, but your local music store doesn’t have it and you don’t know anyone or any website that offers sampling capabilities? With the right help you can just search for the latest release or the undiscovered gem you’ve been craving or retrieve downloads that you have legal access to. In most cases, downloading albums for permanent archiving is illegal, so be aware of copyright laws. These searches are powerful and can scrape legal and illegal mp3s and archives. Be respectful of songs and albums and know when they are rightfully free and available. Now choose your route depending on whether you want a song or an entire album: SONG-ORIENTED Dilandau Convenient and thorough search with easy listening and [...]

Last.fm serves up free mp3s, and I’ve said so before on other pages. When it first came out there was no search feature and you only knew if you landed on their page or crafted a special heavy google search with advanced operators. Ashlee Simpson’s album was up for a week a long time ago. Since then, they have a free download section featuring popular tracks of the week with subsections for popular tags. The downside is you can’t search tags other than ones listed, and there is no telling which bands offer downloads. Of the current listing, there’s only a small handful that I recognize and smaller of what I’m interested in. I can’t sort free R&B tracks because the tag doesn’t exist. I can’t sort by a decade tag like “90s” or unpopular “Ragtime.” Nor can I get my fix of bebop or freejazz without going to every artist hoping their page shows the FREE button. I am personally grateful for group efforts for the good of all… or individual hard or tedious work like this fantasmo user-generated list of bands and albums split up into genres. This fixes some functions lacking in the limited weekly display provided [...]

KEXP delivers for all a wonderful podcast for the Song of the Day with links to all the previous days in case you missed the download. These are normal mp3s that can be automatically setup for itunes or viewed in Firefox for manual saving. A few days ago I found this and was pleasantly relieved to find a few things for my taste- a track from Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, a great rocking instrumental from Pelican, and some other great ones that I unfortunately already had most of (but you may not) from when I was internetting on O.C.D. download binges. There are no ads or weird podcasty hazards other than plugging in the xml file linked above and downloading. Obviously it requires a connection to download and some space to download it, but you’re bound to have it if you can view this page. Setting up through iTunes is just as easy as viewing the render in Firefox… just find “Advanced” in the menu, then “Subscribe to Podcast” and paste the link in there. Edit: I don’t believe I spelled “music” wrong in the title (Nusic). I’ll leave it there for completeness and to document my mistake. Firefox spell [...]

From my previous post I found “Miserlou” played by the Air Force. I managed to find some others that are pretty interesting. Some for the Christmas season, some patriotic songs, and a few hymns and ceremonials. Usually everything produced by the government is public domain, but things become tricky if they borrowed or used copyright or published material. The liner notes mention permissions from Warner Brothers, BMI, ASCAP, and other companies. It also states the CD is approved for use in public service broadcasting and Air Force activities such as recruiting, troop morale, and retention. They are certainly free, but there may be some restrictions I am not aware of (Like selling them would be illegal, not sure about filesharing). The United States Air Force has kindly offered some mp3s from physical releases they’ve made. The link divides things into Patriotic, Ceremonial, Marches, Popular & Show Songs, Rock / Pop / Country / R&B, Holiday, Choral, Classical, Jazz, and Traditional / Celtic / Folk. There are a total of 41 browsable selections. Clicking “Next” will send you to the next album of theirs. Almost all releases have a few downloadable goodies. They all have mandatory preview as they start playing [...]

Most people know the guitar driven riff of “Misirlou” from Pulp Fiction, and others know it as being a song played by all the hot surf bands with Dick Dale being the first in the wave of ’60s bands. The truth is it goes way back at least to the 1920s. Michalis Patrinos is said to have performed the rebetiko in 1927, and a recording exists from around 1930. Richard Spotwood’s Ethnic Music on Records, Volume 3: Eastern Europe lists a recording by Tetos Demetriades for Victor in 1927. [source] Across wikipedia and other sites are several versions of the song: Tetos Dimitriadis unknown date, possibly 1927. Michalis Patrinos about 1930. Other later recorded mp3s at the end of this post. (same as above source link) US Air Force Band The Strolling Strings, 2004. (other unrelated mp3s to check out too)

There are times when I persist in the most random things. Sometimes it’s productive; other times it betters my life in no significant way. What I’m about to show you is very handy, but the amount I spent tinkering on it didn’t save me too much effort. Well, it actually did shape up 20,000 of my mp3s in an automated fashion so it was not futile. The geek in you will enjoy some of the techniques, and laymen will have some upper-level tools to clean up and fix tags. Quick Links If you are impatient, jump to what you need: - Trim Trailing/Preceding/Extra Space - Spacing…(Proper, Amount) - Title Case (It’s a Smart Conversion) - Namings (O’Brian, McCarthy, MacDonald) - DJ, vs., MC, EP, CD, XVI. (Upper Case) - Contraction- Add Apostrophe’s (Can’t, let’s) * Download All (zip) or Right Click>Save individual .mta file. Instructions: 1.
About 20 mp3s are offered at Tuneresource.com supplying ancient folk, jazz, and blues before your day. If you can get past the annoying flash sound that loads on every page, you should see downward on the page (below the search box in the center) a drop down menu titled Free MP3 Tunes! with jazz and folk containing a small collection of good songs, and a single number listed under blues. I highly recommend Uncle Dave Macon and Woody Guthrie singing “We Shall Be Free.” It sounds like Woody’s playing with Cisco Houston and/or Lead Belly. I don’t know if they rotate their free downloads, but if you’ve been here before let me know if the freebies change. No registration is needed to quickly download these mp3s. That’s for purchasing digital music that isn’t offered for free. I haven’t bought anything here, but there seems to be a hefty selection of old blues if you’re interested. Otherwise you can browse through my list of early folk, blues, and jazz sites that won’t cost a cent.

A friend of mine pointed me to a site of underground songs of Elliott Smith. As some unreleased tracks later came out on official products, some other rarities have been cut to stay out of RIAA’s way. There is a heaping helping of mp3s waiting for enthusiasts of this guy all for free. I admit I don’t have much experience with Mr. Smith (I don’t have any o’ his records). For some reason I link this guy with Jeff Buckley. They both died, Jeff found missing while in a river and Elliot of alleged self-inflicted knife stab to the chest. Jeff- 1997; Elliott- 2003. Their sounds aren’t identical, but most compatible. I also don’t have any Buckley records. I only know about them both from casual listens and reading about them. So there’s also a personal connection I make due to the distance of my admiration. Funny thing is I’m not crazy about both of them, but I don’t mind their sound either. I haven’t heard enough of Elliott Smith to make a decision just yet. The demos are average quality from the site. Each file is zipped individually so you have to unzip every file (which is a hassle [...]
