Yes, I just invented a word, unawarer: n. a person who is unaware or not familiar. And this here is a guide, not a tour guide, but a textual guide to spread the thought-provoking butter that is Paul Westerberg and the musical bread that was The Replacements. If you have glanced over my site you’d find I’ve got Westerburgundy sprinkled across random posts. And this guy is worth your time. He one of those that deserves more attention… Well he might be better off being the “Best thing that never happened.” And that is what he’s. He possesses the talents of genius wordplay, tonal breath control, messy performances, off key brilliance, and the power to make you feel nostalgia for the future/present. There is something special that is hard to pinpoint. Paul takes an A.D.D. approach to music. Capture the concept of a song in the first few takes because he’ll forget it in its precise birth. That is why some of his solo work sounds like demos, ridden with insignificant errors, abrupt transitions, and mumbly segments in lyrics. But he is just as capable of making a gorgeous polyphony with an array of angelic intricacies. The Music He has [...]

A few months ago I was working on making my own instrument from a cigar box. There are many guitars made out of odds and ends, and cigar boxes have been popular for do-it-yourself blues players since pre-war legends. Being an amateur craftsman with wood, I made the best out of my skills and the hand tools at my disposal. I was able to make due with some wood/metal files, a hacksaw, a power drill, and sandpaper. I decided not to put frets on it after realizing that the action would be too high, so I made it a slide guitar. As you can see in the photo, I made f-holes as seen on violins instead of the typical round hole of acoustic guitars because the neck extends through the center all the way past the bridge. The tuning pegs were too high to secure the strings properly, so I had to add a riser to the nut (hence the high action). I also put in a homemade pickup that plugs in just like an ordinary electric guitar. It’s not a guitar pickup, but it does amplify the sound and works with 1/4″ guitar chords (notice the jack on the [...]

The following is a review by the author of the album- Mistakes Make Music. Bolie Folke (his real name is undisclosed) was kind enough to let me post his biographical account of the recording below: Today I made an album ready for the public to download using the one-man-band name of Bolie Folke. It’s a quick and dirty album birthed by pressure-induced creativity. It began with my rendition of “Jesus is a Mighty Good Leader,” a pre-war blues song by Skip James in the public domain. It was also covered by Beck Hansen. I took the song and played only one root chord over it with a bit of fingerpicking embellishments and seasonings to add some color. The harmonica was improvisation (you might be able to tell that I haven’t practiced in a while). As I pondered my spontaneous version of the song, I was reminded of a cool project that I found a long while ago called Album-A-Day from Crap Art (aptly titled). I went to the site and found out if I participated, then I’d be breaking one of the rules: No ideas from before the chosen day! This means covers or reinterpretations are not allowed. I decided [...]

Besides some of the more popular blog enhancements, like a tag cloud, quicktags for comments, and instant page translation, I’ve had a few hidden gems that passing visitors might not be aware of. I like adding the small personal touches: CSS styled Text Selection Not many people change the selection (user-highlighted text) to match their design. I thought it was just another thing that makes sense to keep consistent. Custom scroll icon A firefox-only easter egg will be found if you click your scroll wheel (the middle button). Don’t roll the wheel, just press and you’ll see a different icon, colored to fit my web layout. In the screenshot, the icon is near the center of the page, colored with green arrows and a semi-transparent black circle. A bit of advice for IE Internet Explorer (even the latest version) bugs me because of its bugs, security, lack of web standards support, and a few other reasons. I’ve added a little “alert bar” for those who use IE (with the help of conditional comments in the source code). Screenshot: Faviconized external links Not so hidden, but cool nonetheless. For every link that leaves my domain, there is a graphical favicon of [...]

I have held out long enough in designing a “showcase” section for my website. I decided to gather some goodies for everyone to check out. Portfolio sounds too businesslike, but regular old folks can see what things I created without being a prospective customer, employer, or venture capitalist. You’ll enjoy it if you like art, free fonts, free games, or you’re just curious to see what I have up my sleeve. I’ll try to add some missing things and extra images as time goes by if need be. Hope you like it.

I’ve written a manuscript full of bizarre and experimental poems of about 80 small pages. I’d like people to read it if they are interested in a short, but interesting book. I’d let you download a .pdf file to read in Adobe reader. I’ll send it to anybody for free, but I would appreciate if you’d do any or all the following: -Critique overall quality -note favorite/least-liked poems -notify of grammar or mistakes (although misspellings are probably intentional) -general suggestions or comments This way I get an amateur editor, and hopefully you get a nice read. I warn you it may be too strange for a normal reader of fiction, it is quite paradoxical. There are a few notes to self still in the book, but it is basically finished and readable. The reason I don’t post the download link on the website is because I don’t want just anyone taking my writings without me knowing about it. But I may release it to the general public anyway. Just contact me if you want to read it or you are interested in publishing it.

Time has turned around, dripping past the sleeper. Wasting away, wasting it may, run away with the wind. New sights of old return to the fields. Elderly earth gives birth to a new season.
