In comes Grandpaboy and Paul Westerberg doing the old one-two. Unless you’ve heard of Westerberg or know of the Replacements, you may be oblivious to the underrated CDs known as Mono and Stereo. It was my first ever purchase from the Paul catalog. It’s been one of my favorite discs and certainly one of the best multi-disc sets to ever grace the world. Think of this as an updated Basement Tapes without the overdubs that hinder its rawness. There is plenty of praise of the album, and I’m here confirming the unheard goodness. Talk about cohesion. Mono is a rocker borrowing all that is good from the Stones. Nevermind the demo sound. Some call it lo-fi, but I call it phenomenal. The guitar work is very “mono,” or tonic, or drone-like singularity (not in a Middle-Eastern way). In any way, it comes off as brilliance while retaining mostly elementary guitar work, with smokin’ bluesy rhythms that keep everything in line. Stereo is just as good. This one’s a lay-back-and-chill recording that fits any occasion. Feeling lowdown and ready to rue the day–this is your album. Is everything going just right–Stereo is at your service to consolidate everything. I find that [...]

Yes, I just invented a word, unawarer: n. a person who is unaware or not familiar. And this here is a guide, not a tour guide, but a textual guide to spread the thought-provoking butter that is Paul Westerberg and the musical bread that was The Replacements. If you have glanced over my site you’d find I’ve got Westerburgundy sprinkled across random posts. And this guy is worth your time. He one of those that deserves more attention… Well he might be better off being the “Best thing that never happened.” And that is what he’s. He possesses the talents of genius wordplay, tonal breath control, messy performances, off key brilliance, and the power to make you feel nostalgia for the future/present. There is something special that is hard to pinpoint. Paul takes an A.D.D. approach to music. Capture the concept of a song in the first few takes because he’ll forget it in its precise birth. That is why some of his solo work sounds like demos, ridden with insignificant errors, abrupt transitions, and mumbly segments in lyrics. But he is just as capable of making a gorgeous polyphony with an array of angelic intricacies. The Music He has [...]

Forgive my use of the words “power users.” I don’t write exclusively for the advanced. I tend to write simplistically even when the task is a bit in-depth. This one is actually pretty easy (but explaining the default sorting abilities is a nightmare). I’m using 7.0.2 I believe, so if you are the type who grabs the bleeding edge (and often bug ridden and little-tested) updates then your newer version might not be exactly as I describe it. Most should apply though. Skipping Articles of Speech & More (The, An, DJ) Want to order your artist by skipping over common beginning titles like DJ, tHe, Mr., or language specific prefixes? Advanced Global Artist Sorting is possible in Windows by navigating Windows Explorer to [Drive Letter]:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.Resources\en.lproj\Localizable.strings. Open this with a plain text editor like Notepad or your preferred editor [but not Microsoft Word]. Line 570 has a line that says “Reordered Artist Strings.” You can jump to this by searching for this using the Find feature to go to Reordered Artist Strings. Below your search there should be some code like the one below except it contains variations on THE. The code shown will bypass names starting with DJ, so [...]

The fellow who arose into the music world in the 1960s and is still kicking cannot be duplicated, cloned, or replaced. There can be no replacements, but there can be The Replacements. The ‘Mats (as the band is nicknamed) have little in common with Dylan, but there are some resembling characteristics of its lead singer in a broad sense. Ever since I heard Paul Westerberg, I could tell he was holding the gift of songwriting that Dylan had. Like Robert Zimmerman, he has explored and avoided the polytomy of genres. Without being a Bob soundalike, Paul has paved his own musical path with Dylan as one of many references. There is a twenty year gap between when these artists first faced the world with their guitars. With these thoughts in mind, I was surprised (or at least interested) in reading an article I stumbled on after developing my own personal connections. For the most part, the author of the article (Bob Mehr of The Chicago Tribune) gets the facts pretty straight. Although I do question that Bob Dylan told a shocked Joan Baez that he wrote “Masters of War” to cash in. I have followed both Paul Westerberg and Bob [...]

I wrote earlier about the death of Singingfish media search, an amazing resource of online music. Since then I’ve been seeking alternatives to singingfish.com and I’ve got 11 solutions that will help you find that free mp3 that got lost in the interweb. Starting in order from average to best (1 is average, 11 is best). I tested the searches using the technique I dub the “Paul Westerberg method” (the standard of not using today’s most well-known band, but not being too obscure either). Seekasong – Working mp3 links, but the database isn’t extensive. There is some things to find, but only if you aren’t picky about specific songs. Includes standard search and viewing artist by first letter. Bloggdigger – It’s not easy to filter out podcasts and random files. It’s either a hit or miss with this engine. Some links are down or inactive. free mp3 downloads – Despite its pathetic excuse for a url with a double hyphen, the site locates a decent number of the latest mp3s with quick download links with no cumbersome multi-click navigation. They note that songs normally don’t last more than 24 hours, so you may end up with broken links here and [...]
