Personal finance is important, especially in economic slumps. Whether you are an in-debt college student considering student loans or a successful business owner with a sum of unspent funds, you need to keep watch over your money. Making money is something altogether a different subject, but once you have it you should let it work for you. Having it sit in the bank without earning interest over time does you little good. Inevitable inflation makes your cash lass valuable than if you were to spend it as soon as you got it. Instead of wasting more hours of your life at work, employ your money to earn on its own. A safe and easy solution that does the job for you is to take advantage of compounding interest through an insured high-yield online savings account. This is a small step that could give you results while keeping your money liquid without any risk or fees. Initially EmigrantDirect was a leader in offering the greatest yield with the least hassles. They have since dropped their rates below the other online competitors, making them not as appealing. E*trade has stuck in the top percent of better rates, but their service hasn’t rated [...]

The year is about through and I’d like to scan through the past of liquidparallax.com. I’m usually the person who scolds other site for doing “This Month’s Best Posts Roundup,” but this is slightly different. In over a year of doing this blog, I’ve never put myself in an egocentric position and said “Internet users can’t get enough of me. Instead of being more useful I’ll just repeat myself.” Au contraire my friends. It is my hope that you do not have to suffer through recycled material. Nobody cares for used underwear, and that’s where I don’t come in… There does come a time, though, when things get overlooked especially when I first started this site and nobody really saw it. I’m not a fan of number crunching accounting type stuff, so I like to keep non-fun math out of things. That’s why I’ll skim through some of the pages that get a lot of traffic without getting statistical, and I’ll jump into some pages that haven’t received any recognition and give some background to my madness.
There are times when I persist in the most random things. Sometimes it’s productive; other times it betters my life in no significant way. What I’m about to show you is very handy, but the amount I spent tinkering on it didn’t save me too much effort. Well, it actually did shape up 20,000 of my mp3s in an automated fashion so it was not futile. The geek in you will enjoy some of the techniques, and laymen will have some upper-level tools to clean up and fix tags. Quick Links If you are impatient, jump to what you need: - Trim Trailing/Preceding/Extra Space - Spacing…(Proper, Amount) - Title Case (It’s a Smart Conversion) - Namings (O’Brian, McCarthy, MacDonald) - DJ, vs., MC, EP, CD, XVI.
A friend of mine pointed me to a site of underground songs of Elliott Smith. As some unreleased tracks later came out on official products, some other rarities have been cut to stay out of RIAA’s way. There is a heaping helping of mp3s waiting for enthusiasts of this guy all for free. I admit I don’t have much experience with Mr. Smith (I don’t have any o’ his records). For some reason I link this guy with Jeff Buckley. They both died, Jeff found missing while in a river and Elliot of alleged self-inflicted knife stab to the chest. Jeff- 1997; Elliott- 2003. Their sounds aren’t identical, but most compatible. I also don’t have any Buckley records. I only know about them both from casual listens and reading about them. So there’s also a personal connection I make due to the distance of my admiration. Funny thing is I’m not crazy about both of them, but I don’t mind their sound either. I haven’t heard enough of Elliott Smith to make a decision just yet. The demos are average quality from the site. Each file is zipped individually so you have to unzip every file (which is a hassle [...]

Being a slightly picky person when it comes to music tag metadata in my files, I haven’t found a great way to original release year OR recorded year for a compilation or non-standard album. For instance, I got a Sufer Rosa/Come On Pilgrim combo disc and it was fairly easy to figure out the original release year for each album. It would be virtually pointless to tag the year the hybrid disc was produced. It’s the MUSIC that I care about, not the manufacturing of the reissue or remastered edition. Even albums with bonus material should be tagged with first release in mind. The actual bonus material is up to debate whether or not to tag it when it finally gets released or the same period of recording. There are three potential dates: date written, date recorded, date product is made. I personally like recorded date for historical relevance. While allmusic.com is a great resource and will usually tell you the year a song appears on the original album, reliability falls apart once we precede the album era or unreleased songs. Take Woody Guthrie… He’s got a Dust Bowl Ballads album recorded in 1940 for a 3-78rpm set. In later [...]

So here’s a man who does a little of everything. He’s a writer, an instructor, and a musician. I don’t know much about him, but I’d imagine he shares a interest in a broad range of things like me. He is featured in many places in the media, yet I never heard his name. I forgot how I even came upon him. I landed on his wikipedia page maybe as vague connection to Marshall McLuhan made by another online source. I don’t remember though. He might be labeled a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none. I plan to be a jack-of-many-trade, master-of-some. I don’t have the box binding mentality to stick to only one path of learning. Back in the ’70s Mr. Levinson put out a bunch of non-hit songs. A few can be listened to on this page [3+ mp3s]. His stuff reminds me of the Turtles or the Byrds but ridiculously happy pop from the earlier decade. Murry the K doesn’t sound too bad though. Well, I think the name is cool anyhow.

I have given a lot of thought lately about antiperspirant. Most people don’t give it any thought and others might have some shifty knowledge about it. I’m the person that enjoys new information and likes to learn. Unfortunately, there are certain things I’d like to know about but lacks no definitive information. What I was able to find is rather interesting though. This is my educational discovery I’d like to share with you… My first stop is at wikipedia where there is no article about antiperspirant (it’s part of the Deodorant entry). Here are the main things I found by doing an ounce of research: All anti-perspirants are considered drugs by the FDA. All antiperspirants are aluminum-based, and work by clogging the duct of the sweat gland. So the opening swells because the aluminum ions interact with the electrolytes/water in the cells. When the quantity of water matches the amount blocking with the aluminum there is equilibrium, and soon the fluid passes back out and unswells and you go back to sweating. Cancer Controversy. The fear came from the idea that toxins would stay in the body instead of being sweat out. There is nothing scientifically to support this, but [...]

Every now and then I am going to review an obscure, rare, or under appreciated piece of music that can be found in discount racks or elsewhere for dirt cheap. Think of these as Amazon steals (but nothing illegal), complete with personal notes or cool background info. This first one I’d like to share is Heartbreak Town by the band, The Stand. Right now it’s going for $0.46. You can tell how unknown this is because Amazon didn’t even give it an artist. The picture and everything is correct though. This is the second release they put out. Three were released on the Wonderland label: 1989 – The Stand 1990 – Heartbreak Town 1992 – In Three Days The only other album for sale online is In Three Days. I did a search to see if they made anything afterwards because Amazon lists other Audio CDs under the name Stand. There is another band called STAND that started around in the 2000s, but they are unrelated. The Stand that I’m talking about came out of Canada and the lead singer was Tony Valenziano. The funny thing was I purchased this thinking it was somehow related to Altar Boys. I was [...]

I scared myself when I realized after years of playing guitar that I was incapable of playing 6-string barre chords (minor) and have all strings ring out (string 3 in particular). I am positive that I was able to do this before. The sad thing is doing something like F minor, it’s crucial to have the minor third (G#) ring on the G string. On all minor chord shapes that use the basic minor barre (133111, 244222, 577555, etc) it would either faintly buzz or mute out. I know all the tricks to remedy this: keep my index finger straight; to turn my finger to the outside; reposition my thumb for better leverage. But this wasn’t helping. I have the strength, but it seems my finger is too shapely with joints and muscle that the gaps are too distant to secure the string to the fret. I was relieved to find out something else was contributing to this- I had a D gauge string on my G string position. I went for my acoustic guitar which is tuned appropriately with the correct strings and I was able to play minor chords with success. Another method I tried (with the high [...]

It will be ready in a while. I want to make sure it’s easy and accurate. The topic: music. And don’t worry– it will be worth the wait. Yesterday I watched a documentary: Salivador Dali – Genius Or Madman Below is just a 5-minute sample. I’m not about to download another video player by Veoh just to watch this in its entirity, so I went over to a video downloader site for youtube, myspace, dailymotion, etc. If you follow my lead and grab this video, be sure to save the file with a .flv extension or it won’t play. The .FLV file is playable in VLC media player. For some odd reason, scrolling through the video didn’t work, but you can rewind and fast forward with the buttons. (Whew!
