Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, “Round and Round” Rating 4.5 out of 5.0 My iPhone is stuck in the 1960s– or at least that is what someone might think if they listen to my recent playlist. With the wave of ’60s inspired tracks that have been reaching my radar lately, I really have been flooded with retro inspired tunes. Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti’s “Round and Round” is my newest “throwback” favorite. I heard this song a few months ago and was quite impressed; however it wasn’t until recently that it popped up on my iPhone rotation, and boy am I happy it did. I highly suggest you check it out. Is it good enough to be added to your rotation?
Kim Taylor is a better candidate for incessantly repeated airplay than Sara Bareilles. I wrote about this song over a year ago stating that I had heard it a year before that. Unfortunately, the studio mp3s are no longer hosted on her site, but I was lucky enough to catch her demo version when it came out, then her album version, as well as a live version. Her live sets are available with good listening quality at archive.org. Tegan and Sara are another pair of females that I have been flooding into my August ears. Their latest album The Con is probably one of my favorites of the 2000s. Minnesota’s radio station The Current was gracious enough to capture a drum-free version of the title track for us. Tegan & Sara are at it again in the same session with “Back in Your Head.” The simplistic piano reminds me of a criticism against David Albarn’s easy pop-like piano instrumentation. To me, it all sounds good. I would put up half their CD if I wanted to ruin the fact that a mixtape should have a mix of artists. Andrew Bird is brilliance. I can appreciate his style more than Sufjan [...]

It’s about time I made and shared a monthly mix of songs that call out to me in some way. Instead of going the illegal route and handing out a downloadable mp3 playlist, I figured I’d capture the collection on video where possible. I know… I’m 2 months behind. But this is truly my April playlist sitting in iTunes, with May and June trailing right after it. Most of the songs here reflect my personal composure for the month. Sometimes the lyrics just hit the focal point, other times it’s the nostalgia of the track, and still other times when a segment of words sets a spark on my mind. Instead of going through the intimate details of my personal life, maybe you can interpret why these songs qualify as my monthly life soundtrack (though sometimes there may be no reason). And maybe you’ll find these fitting for a chapter in your music diary. Named “Predicting April” because it definitely set the tone for things to come. I do not claim to be a psychic or a prophet though. I could not get this out of my head. Only snippets though. I’m a big fan of the album this comes [...]

As described at the end of my guide to online music, here’s are some playlists that will give you the power tools to organize your music better like a power user. Smart Playlists Top 100 Played Limit to 100 items selected by most often played I listen to post rock and instrumental stuff while sleeping sometimes, so I exclude those playlists, streams, and spoken word. Sometimes podcasts and other unwanted things crawl into the list if they have a high play count, so setting a time range (1:05 to 20:00) ensures short intros and lengthy podcasts/concerts/interviews are not used. Decades/Era Year is in the range 1960-1970 (any years) If I’m not mistaken, iTunes sets up a playlists of 90s music. You can do the same thing for any dates. No Rating Rating is 0 stars Get to work on rating your songs. You could use something like 1=delete/terrible, 2=repair/poor, 3=acceptable, 4=good, 5=amazing. Then you can make more personal playlists of higher rated songs. Blank Genre Genre is [blank] If you care to organize by genre or just want things complete then fill these in with your desired genre. Some people like to have specific genres (blues-rock, indie, jangle pop) and [...]

(If you have a short attention span and don’t care much for commentary, skip this paragraph and go straight to the five steps for the online music lover) Years ago, it was harder to find out more detailed information about songs and their writers without searching catalogs, or finding related articles or interviews, or talking with a musicologist. Modern times have expanded the capabilities of learning, sorting, and refining what interests us all on a personal basis. On the other hand, digital music and digital management lacks the secondary qualities of a physical library. You have nothing to “hold” …and your mouse doesn’t count. Music loses the entity it had 50 years ago when you had something to look at and call your own. Now everyone basically has their own radio station right at their fingertips. Today, radio no longer has the powerful position as it did long ago because it has been transferred directly to the person. Just like listening radio, you never worry about rewinding a tape or scrambling through a basement of records to hear the next song. It just plays (until you say otherwise). You are the DJ. And here is how to use your tools [...]

I’ve got an iPod that can’t store all my music, but I still automatically update checked items in my iTunes library (it’s a syncing option). I’ve found a workaround for one of my wishes that Apple probably won’t be adding any time soon. My desire is to sort tracks by check mark box (whether selected or unselected). There is no way to do this natively, but we can configure a smart playlist. Make a smart playlist by holding SHIFT, and clicking on the button on the bottom left. It looks like a gear or cog when SHIFT is held down, and it’s a plus sign (+) otherwise. You should see a popup to set rules and options for the play list. Edit the settings to match the picture shown. Uncheck “Match following rule.” Check the following three check-boxes, and edit the second check box so your entire library is considered. There are several ways to catch all of your items, but this works if your library is less than 900GB. Now you’ve got a playlist of all of your checked items only (I called it “Checked on iPod”). Anytime you uncheck an item, it will instantly leave that playlist; and [...]
