July is certainly a trip. It’s a pronouncement of lingering summer. It marks the start of changes and getaways. It was like a prequel to a round trip vacation and the month has return to even more new explosions. You can insert some of your favorite party jams as well if you feel the need. Lykke Li performing the song “Little Bit” in a minimalist setting. She possesses a rhythmic quality that compliments the pitch perfect voice. This is a unexpected find that is bound to become more popular as time goes on. “All You Do Is Talk” by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. They are not black. I haven’t seen any motorcycles. I have no clue if this club is actually full of rebels. What I can tell you is that this song is mighty fine. Shown here is a quality version live. Grab Baby 81 if this sounds like sound you’d like more of. This is one of a few great songs from the album. Shotstar God Bless This Mess [m4a file (AAC). No video available.] I’m going obscure on this one. Shotstar is one of those bands that weren’t much to shake chicken legs at, but they managed [...]

It’s about time I made and shared a monthly mix of songs that call out to me in some way. Instead of going the illegal route and handing out a downloadable mp3 playlist, I figured I’d capture the collection on video where possible. I know… I’m 2 months behind. But this is truly my April playlist sitting in iTunes, with May and June trailing right after it. Most of the songs here reflect my personal composure for the month. Sometimes the lyrics just hit the focal point, other times it’s the nostalgia of the track, and still other times when a segment of words sets a spark on my mind. Instead of going through the intimate details of my personal life, maybe you can interpret why these songs qualify as my monthly life soundtrack (though sometimes there may be no reason). And maybe you’ll find these fitting for a chapter in your music diary. Named “Predicting April” because it definitely set the tone for things to come. I do not claim to be a psychic or a prophet though. I could not get this out of my head. Only snippets though. I’m a big fan of the album this comes [...]

In comes Grandpaboy and Paul Westerberg doing the old one-two. Unless you’ve heard of Westerberg or know of the Replacements, you may be oblivious to the underrated CDs known as Mono and Stereo. It was my first ever purchase from the Paul catalog. It’s been one of my favorite discs and certainly one of the best multi-disc sets to ever grace the world. Think of this as an updated Basement Tapes without the overdubs that hinder its rawness. There is plenty of praise of the album, and I’m here confirming the unheard goodness. Talk about cohesion. Mono is a rocker borrowing all that is good from the Stones. Nevermind the demo sound. Some call it lo-fi, but I call it phenomenal. The guitar work is very “mono,” or tonic, or drone-like singularity (not in a Middle-Eastern way). In any way, it comes off as brilliance while retaining mostly elementary guitar work, with smokin’ bluesy rhythms that keep everything in line. Stereo is just as good. This one’s a lay-back-and-chill recording that fits any occasion. Feeling lowdown and ready to rue the day–this is your album. Is everything going just right–Stereo is at your service to consolidate everything. I find that [...]

Yes, I just invented a word, unawarer: n. a person who is unaware or not familiar. And this here is a guide, not a tour guide, but a textual guide to spread the thought-provoking butter that is Paul Westerberg and the musical bread that was The Replacements. If you have glanced over my site you’d find I’ve got Westerburgundy sprinkled across random posts. And this guy is worth your time. He one of those that deserves more attention… Well he might be better off being the “Best thing that never happened.” And that is what he’s. He possesses the talents of genius wordplay, tonal breath control, messy performances, off key brilliance, and the power to make you feel nostalgia for the future/present. There is something special that is hard to pinpoint. Paul takes an A.D.D. approach to music. Capture the concept of a song in the first few takes because he’ll forget it in its precise birth. That is why some of his solo work sounds like demos, ridden with insignificant errors, abrupt transitions, and mumbly segments in lyrics. But he is just as capable of making a gorgeous polyphony with an array of angelic intricacies. The Music He has [...]
