WordPress updates are often needed for security fixes and the most recent additions (v2.5) to usability are pretty nice. The negative end of things is correcting plugin bugs, confirming database integrity, and revising my custom-developed theme. Luckily I don’t have a heavy load of intricate sites that all need updating, but even the few that I oversee need to be tweaked for a smooth ride across the interverse. I’m still looking around for plugin alternatives, minor error corrections, and an eased mind. I’ve already put a few enhancing tools in their place. I even got over the terrible native tagging system and managed to ditch UltimateTagWarrior without losing my favorite goodies. And here’s where I’m heading: Replace AJAX commenting plugin-replacement no longer necessary Look into Database errors stemming from table wp_post2cat SELECT cat_ID AS ID, MAX(post_modified) AS last_mod FROM `wp_posts` p LEFT JOIN `wp_post2cat` pc ON p.ID = pc.post_id LEFT JOIN `wp_categories` c ON pc.category_id = c.cat_ID WHERE post_status = 'publish' GROUP BY cat_ID -SOLVED! It was an outdated sitemap generator. Find alternative or fix for secondary blog theme features. Believe I can fly Just about everything is where it should be. I guess updates aren’t bad at all.

Some websites die, progress for the worse, or benefit for recreation. Ideas get recycled, reinvented, abused, and improved. So it goes with web-based audio technology. If you need a replacement site or are just looking for new ways to listen to free music without trouble, then read on. Albumbase is Dead There once was a site called albumbase.com that pointed to complete albums uploaded on Rapidshare and other download sites. It has been down for some time, but more and more smaller communities are returning in their place. Album Hunt is a similar service that offers full album archives to registered users. After signing up, searching is as simple as typing the album name or the artist. The only problem is the downloads no longer work after a while or if someone uploads a copyrighted album and it violates the hosting terms of service. Musire is another free album downloads source, but it doesn’t require registration. Places like these thrive on confirming broken links and fresh uploads. The more users, the more chance of a growing selection. Online Media SeeqPod is an interactive search that functions like a web music player. Features in-browser controls for instant listening, as well as [...]

Since the beginning of January, Alexa Redirect links have been deprecated and no longer function. They work as a prevention to get to your site. It used to be possible to inject your link with a forced redirect from alexa: http://redirect.alexa.com/redirect?http://liquidparallax.com would tell Alexa someone is going to my homepage. It was debated whether this would send info to your rank. In any case it could harm your Google Page Rank and make links inaccessible when the redirect is down or is broken, which has happened. There is plenty of talk on how to increase your score. And along with it all is bad advice or misinformed instruction. Another myth: installing the website widget has no standing on your numbers unless one of your site visitors decides to use the toolbar as a result of being curios about your widget. There is no way to increase your Alexa Rank beyond what your site is capable of performing. You can boost your site’s traffic rank for Alexa if you actually have traffic. A rank of 1 means you have the most traffic that has been monitored by Alexa (right now it’s Yahoo.com). Each number is a position, and you can’t get [...]

The year is about through and I’d like to scan through the past of liquidparallax.com. I’m usually the person who scolds other site for doing “This Month’s Best Posts Roundup,” but this is slightly different. In over a year of doing this blog, I’ve never put myself in an egocentric position and said “Internet users can’t get enough of me. Instead of being more useful I’ll just repeat myself.” Au contraire my friends. It is my hope that you do not have to suffer through recycled material. Nobody cares for used underwear, and that’s where I don’t come in… There does come a time, though, when things get overlooked especially when I first started this site and nobody really saw it. I’m not a fan of number crunching accounting type stuff, so I like to keep non-fun math out of things. That’s why I’ll skim through some of the pages that get a lot of traffic without getting statistical, and I’ll jump into some pages that haven’t received any recognition and give some background to my madness.
Before I get criticized for using the word hallucination, I’d like to point out that illusion and hallucination are different, but they share a bit in common. The first (illusion) meaning you perceive something the wrong way, and the latter meaning you have a vision of something without any sightly cause to promote it (a green ghost from a blank white wall). I’ll also point out that a hallucination will probably have some visual stimulus that may influence what exactly you hallucinate. Even when eyes are closed they still perceive darkness. If outside on a sunny day with your eyes shut, you can still see light reflecting on your eyelids, making a lesser darkness than eyes closed in the dark. It is my opinion that illusions are subtle differences that come from undecipherable stimuli, and more imaginative illusions are deemed hallucinations in the presence of more subtle things or atmosphere. Foreword: None of these require 3D glasses (the Red/Blue shades for Anaglyph images) Begin the Tripping Autostereograms are the common single picture optical illusions where you start close up and cross-eyed and move back and start to see depth. A name often associated with this is “Magic Eye” although they [...]

Instead of wasting time downloading things by hand, page by page, clicking links generated from javascript, right clicking to save or waiting for each save dialog box, you could be using a download manager to automatically grab certain files from links off of a page. DownThemAll is my choice for Firefox. Let’s say you want to download all mp3 links listed here. After DownThemAll is installed, go to this page and right click in the black area of the layout to avoid clicking a link. Once you right-click, you should select the DownThemAll button. Add the below code to “Additional Filters,” and make sure “Reg. Exp.” (to the right) is checked. Better yet, save the code as a permanent filter in your preferences. Filter Code: /\/[^\\]+\.(aac|m4a|ogg|wma|mp3)$/ or if you are having troubles “.mp3” (without quotes) should be accurate enough as a filter. A last solution would be to alter/copy an existing filter replaced with an “mp3″ filetype. Now for the good part. Instead of navigating threw hundreds of pages, how about going straight to the mp3s? Some Last.fm folks made an epitonic m3u of all songs (no longer working), then another commentor crafted an .m3u list of Artists beginning with [...]

There are times when I persist in the most random things. Sometimes it’s productive; other times it betters my life in no significant way. What I’m about to show you is very handy, but the amount I spent tinkering on it didn’t save me too much effort. Well, it actually did shape up 20,000 of my mp3s in an automated fashion so it was not futile. The geek in you will enjoy some of the techniques, and laymen will have some upper-level tools to clean up and fix tags. Quick Links If you are impatient, jump to what you need: - Trim Trailing/Preceding/Extra Space - Spacing…(Proper, Amount) - Title Case (It’s a Smart Conversion) - Namings (O’Brian, McCarthy, MacDonald) - DJ, vs., MC, EP, CD, XVI. (Upper Case) - Contraction- Add Apostrophe’s (Can’t, let’s) * Download All (zip) or Right Click>Save individual .mta file. Instructions: 1. To locate the mp3tag actions directory, click “OpenActionsFolder.bat” from the zip file or find %appdata%\Mp3tag\data\actions in your user’s “Documents and Settings” folder. 2.
Being a slightly picky person when it comes to music tag metadata in my files, I haven’t found a great way to original release year OR recorded year for a compilation or non-standard album. For instance, I got a Sufer Rosa/Come On Pilgrim combo disc and it was fairly easy to figure out the original release year for each album. It would be virtually pointless to tag the year the hybrid disc was produced. It’s the MUSIC that I care about, not the manufacturing of the reissue or remastered edition. Even albums with bonus material should be tagged with first release in mind. The actual bonus material is up to debate whether or not to tag it when it finally gets released or the same period of recording. There are three potential dates: date written, date recorded, date product is made. I personally like recorded date for historical relevance. While allmusic.com is a great resource and will usually tell you the year a song appears on the original album, reliability falls apart once we precede the album era or unreleased songs. Take Woody Guthrie… He’s got a Dust Bowl Ballads album recorded in 1940 for a 3-78rpm set. In later [...]

Forgive my use of the words “power users.” I don’t write exclusively for the advanced. I tend to write simplistically even when the task is a bit in-depth. This one is actually pretty easy (but explaining the default sorting abilities is a nightmare). I’m using 7.0.2 I believe, so if you are the type who grabs the bleeding edge (and often bug ridden and little-tested) updates then your newer version might not be exactly as I describe it. Most should apply though. Skipping Articles of Speech & More (The, An, DJ) Want to order your artist by skipping over common beginning titles like DJ, tHe, Mr., or language specific prefixes? Advanced Global Artist Sorting is possible in Windows by navigating Windows Explorer to [Drive Letter]:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.Resources\en.lproj\Localizable.strings. Open this with a plain text editor like Notepad or your preferred editor [but not Microsoft Word]. Line 570 has a line that says “Reordered Artist Strings.” You can jump to this by searching for this using the Find feature to go to Reordered Artist Strings.
I have been using Amazon heavily lately to expand my music collection, catch up on my reading, get textbooks, and getting a DVD [Come Feel Me Tremble] that I’ve been wanting for a while. If you look under the grill of Amazon.com, you can hack your spending techniques and get the best value. Buy used or new (through sellers’ listings) The first step is to be willing to buy a product that has been handled by someone else. Every now and then a deal will come your way on sealed items that are offered by Amazon sellers. The majority of items on Amazon are cost effective when buying used rather than new, even when tacking on shipping charges. Direct Amazon purchases (New items) usually offer free shipping on $25+ orders, but used sellers always have a set shipping rate. The exception are high-demand items and recent releases. Lucinda Williams’ West, which came out February of this year goes for the regular price of $9.99 from the Amazon.com factory and $7.99 in the marketplace. Also, pay attention to the seller’s descriptions and decipher what conditions suit your needs. For instance, there might be a $1.00 CD but it doesn’t include the [...]
