WordPress updates are often needed for security fixes and the most recent additions (v2.5) to usability are pretty nice. The negative end of things is correcting plugin bugs, confirming database integrity, and revising my custom-developed theme. Luckily I don’t have a heavy load of intricate sites that all need updating, but even the few that I oversee need to be tweaked for a smooth ride across the interverse. I’m still looking around for plugin alternatives, minor error corrections, and an eased mind. I’ve already put a few enhancing tools in their place. I even got over the terrible native tagging system and managed to ditch UltimateTagWarrior without losing my favorite goodies. And here’s where I’m heading: Replace AJAX commenting plugin-replacement no longer necessary Look into Database errors stemming from table wp_post2cat SELECT cat_ID AS ID, MAX(post_modified) AS last_mod FROM `wp_posts` p LEFT JOIN `wp_post2cat` pc ON p.ID = pc.post_id LEFT JOIN `wp_categories` c ON pc.category_id = c.cat_ID WHERE post_status = 'publish' GROUP BY cat_ID -SOLVED! It was an outdated sitemap generator. Find alternative or fix for secondary blog theme features. Believe I can fly Just about everything is where it should be. I guess updates aren’t bad at all.

Since the beginning of January, Alexa Redirect links have been deprecated and no longer function. They work as a prevention to get to your site. It used to be possible to inject your link with a forced redirect from alexa: http://redirect.alexa.com/redirect?http://liquidparallax.com would tell Alexa someone is going to my homepage. It was debated whether this would send info to your rank. In any case it could harm your Google Page Rank and make links inaccessible when the redirect is down or is broken, which has happened. There is plenty of talk on how to increase your score. And along with it all is bad advice or misinformed instruction. Another myth: installing the website widget has no standing on your numbers unless one of your site visitors decides to use the toolbar as a result of being curios about your widget. There is no way to increase your Alexa Rank beyond what your site is capable of performing. You can boost your site’s traffic rank for Alexa if you actually have traffic. A rank of 1 means you have the most traffic that has been monitored by Alexa (right now it’s Yahoo.com). Each number is a position, and you can’t get [...]

The year is about through and I’d like to scan through the past of liquidparallax.com. I’m usually the person who scolds other site for doing “This Month’s Best Posts Roundup,” but this is slightly different. In over a year of doing this blog, I’ve never put myself in an egocentric position and said “Internet users can’t get enough of me. Instead of being more useful I’ll just repeat myself.” Au contraire my friends. It is my hope that you do not have to suffer through recycled material. Nobody cares for used underwear, and that’s where I don’t come in… There does come a time, though, when things get overlooked especially when I first started this site and nobody really saw it. I’m not a fan of number crunching accounting type stuff, so I like to keep non-fun math out of things. That’s why I’ll skim through some of the pages that get a lot of traffic without getting statistical, and I’ll jump into some pages that haven’t received any recognition and give some background to my madness.
SEO and keyword ranking is a big deal to white collar internerds, but I look at it as an arbitrary location up to google to shuffle around. I don’t need to be on the front page for the search 11 best 2007 (notice the permalink to that page is /ten-best-places-to-search-free-music/, although I changed the title). Yet other searches don’t reach my site, but other searches engines do. In a perfect world, we wouldn’t need to search for anything. We’d have it already. Google is here to keep it imperfect. That’s why those key words fail to open the doors. It’s up to virtual construction workers to build doors that stay open.

I’m not sure when they did it since I’m not a constant user, but MySpace has come out with another flawed improvement on their site. All external links are hidden behind msplinks.com redirects. What does this mean? Well, when you hover over a link that leaves myspace, you’ll see in your status bar a link to http://www.msplinks.com/randomstring1Y29tLw== instead of the actual site. Tom’s reasoning for this is to deter spammers from linking because the redirect can intercept the URL if it is spam. Another reason they are doing this is to look better in the eyes of Google and to disassociate with bad neighborwebs. Sites that link to spam or are related to spam in some way are knocked down in their standing. Although it means well, this is a big step backwards from a web design and usability standpoint. I think it an essential feature of internet browsing that I can preview the location of a page. Now when I want to click a link, I don’t know if where it will take me. So now I must rely on myspace’s judgment to decide for me. And to top it all off, now users are going to behave differently [...]

I notice that traffic-hungry bloggers and web-savvy advertisers tend to follow SEO marketing schemes of creating filler content and fluffing up word count. They claim that it will keep visitors satisfied and search engines will flock to their precious keywords which will increase click-through rates. The latter may be true, but the former is problematic. I often write an article when I want to encourage myself to do something, I want to help/inform others, or something hasn’t been said (or said too sparingly). I avoid bland and uninspired monologue at all costs, even in real life (but that’s another topic). My friend says it best, whom he got from one of his old teachers. I don’t have the best memory, but as best as I remember it: Say you’re wrote an essay. Try to consolidate everything together, minimizing and getting rid of filler words and sentences (X amount of times) while retaining meaning and intended purpose. When you think you’ve condensed everything, remove one last thing. Kurt Vonnegut says pretty much the same thing: If a sentence, no matter how excellent, does not illuminate your subject in some new and useful way, scratch it out. This type of thinking should [...]

This will help out webmasters, as well as any person who has given there email address on the internet. Fight spammers by saving this page and upload it to your website, then linking to it on other pages of yours. You can also link to other antispam sites and this page if you wish.
I thought it would be a cool idea to answer or expand on queries to search engine key phrases that have referred to my site. If the previous sentence didn’t make any sense: My statistical webserver log tells me what people were searching for when they came to my site. I’ll try to help them find out what they want to know, add commentary, or direct them to more information. I tend to get a few quite a few clicks for phrases like bicarbonate of soda help in clearing acne or baking soda on forehead. I wrote a tip on how to use baking soda for acne treatment in my post about getting acne free. Baking soda will not prevent breakouts on its own, and can exacerbate problems if used the wrong way. Never leave it on for prolonged periods. Wash it all off thoroughly and use it on the skin briefly. It it basic as oppose the acidic, which at the opposite side of the pH spectrum. Strong bases are corrosive and attack tissue, but baking soda is not terribly strong. The best way to use it is to wash your face with it. Either wet your face or [...]

Besides some of the more popular blog enhancements, like a tag cloud, quicktags for comments, and instant page translation, I’ve had a few hidden gems that passing visitors might not be aware of. I like adding the small personal touches: CSS styled Text Selection Not many people change the selection (user-highlighted text) to match their design. I thought it was just another thing that makes sense to keep consistent. Custom scroll icon A firefox-only easter egg will be found if you click your scroll wheel (the middle button). Don’t roll the wheel, just press and you’ll see a different icon, colored to fit my web layout. In the screenshot, the icon is near the center of the page, colored with green arrows and a semi-transparent black circle. A bit of advice for IE Internet Explorer (even the latest version) bugs me because of its bugs, security, lack of web standards support, and a few other reasons. I’ve added a little “alert bar” for those who use IE (with the help of conditional comments in the source code). Screenshot: Faviconized external links Not so hidden, but cool nonetheless. For every link that leaves my domain, there is a graphical favicon of [...]
