One of the head honchos of the Beat Generation, William S. Burroughs, was known for his use of the dream machine, a device that spun around and let light shine through special slits of what looks like a goofy chandelier. You are supposed to close your eyes and some of the ambient light will hit your eyelid and synchronize with your brain waves, to bring you into a calmer state.

Warning: There is a possibility you might get a seizure. Don’t try it if you are epileptic. Use at your own risk!

You can try what it might feel like by testing one online, although there is no spinning or those certain shapes. It just flickers and you sit in front of it to let it relax you and possibly give you some sort of a dream while awake.
